La próxima vez que tenga que duplicar la información completa de un disco duro en otro, no tendré que recurrir a cosas raras gracias a este comando:
#sudo dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/sda bs=1M
Esta claro que los nombres de las unidades serán distintas en cada caso y que se puede hacer en bloques de más de 1Mb.

Apagar la pantalla con un Click
Otro truco muy útil para los que nos movemos mucho con el ordenador es este para apagar el monitor con un click y que vuelva a encenderse sin mas que mover el ratón o pulsar una tecla. Desde la línea de comandos ejecutas (o te creas un lanzador con ese comando en tu barra de herramientas):
#xset dpms force off
y este además suspende el equipo:
#sleep 1 && xset dpms force off
Lo he visto en varios sitios pero el que me ha resultado más eficiente ha sido este post. Más explicaciones aqui.

Script Ubucleaner 1.0
En otro de mis blogs de visita diaria obligada veo el siguiente e interesante post:
Ubucleaner es un script que ayuda a mantener limpio tu Ubuntu.
Qué hace:
* Limpia la cache de APT.
* Borra archivos de configuración de paquetes DEB que se han desinstalado.
* Borra todos los kernels instalados, excepto el que se está usando.
* Vacía las papeleras de todos los usuarios.
1) Descargar Script:
71529-ubucleaner.sh
2) Cambiar permisos para que sea ejecutable:
chmod -c 744 71529-ubucleaner.sh
2) Ejecutar script:
sudo ./71529-ubucleaner.sh

Cómo recuperar el Windows MBR usando un LiveCD
He visto este pedazo truco en el blog de Cesarius Revolutions (copio y pego directamente por que esta megaclaro):
Este procedimiento está probado con los LiveCD’s Ubuntu 7.04, Ubuntu 7.10, Linux Mint
Debes de asegurarte que tu conexión a internet esté activa y funcionando para usar estas instrucciones
* Arranca tu sistema con un LiveCD de Ubuntu o Linux Mint
* Abre el teminal y escribe:
sudo apt-get install ms-sys
Después
ms-sys –mbr /dev/hdX
IMPORTANTE: La “X” indica la partición donde tienes Windows. En el caso de que Windows esté en la partición hda1 debes de usar el comando ms-sys –mbr /dev/hda
* Reinicia y listo, tu sistema arrancará de nuevo con Windows.

Keep Your Linux SSH Session From Disconnecting
I see this useful post in How-To Geek:
You can configure the ssh client to automatically send a protocol no-op code code every number of seconds so that the server won't disconnect you. This is setting is sometimes referred to as Keep-Alive or Stop-Disconnecting-So-Much in other clients.
Global Configuration
Add the following line to the /etc/ssh/ssh_config file:
ServerAliveInterval 60
The number is the amount of seconds before the server with send the no-op code.
Current User Configuration
Add the following lines to the ~/.ssh/config file (create if it doesn't exist)
Host *
ServerAliveInterval 60
Make sure you indent the second line with a space.
Per-Host Configuration
If you only want to enable keep alive for a single server, you can add that into the ~/.ssh/config file with the following syntax:
Host *hostname.com

Keyboard Shortcuts for Bash ( Command Shell for Ubuntu, Debian, Suse, Redhat, Linux, etc)

The default shell on most Linux operating systems is called Bash. There are a couple of important hotkeys that you should get familiar with if you plan to spend a lot of time at the command line. These shortcuts will save you a ton of time if you learn them.
Ctrl + A Go to the beginning of the line you are currently typing on
Ctrl + E Go to the end of the line you are currently typing on
Ctrl + L Clears the Screen, similar to the clear command
Ctrl + U Clears the line before the cursor position. If you are at the end of the line, clears the entire line.

VMware Workstation 5.5.4 en Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty
Hola,
este es el proceso completo de instalación que he tenido que seguir para poder hacer correr el VMware 5.5.4 en mi Ubuntu Feisty, espero que a alguno os sea de utilidad.
1) Primero descargé el fichero VMware-workstation-5.5.4-44386.tar.gz
2) Luego lo descomprimí en una carpeta /home/david/programas/vmware-distrib
3) Ejecuté el script de instalación:
david@d:~/programas/vmware-distrib$ sudo ./vmware-install.pl

5) Descargé este bonito parche vmware-any-any-update109.tar.gz
6) Descomprimí el fichero en otra carpeta y ejecuté el script del propio parche sudo ./runme.pl

este es el proceso completo de instalación que he tenido que seguir para poder hacer correr el VMware 5.5.4 en mi Ubuntu Feisty, espero que a alguno os sea de utilidad.
1) Primero descargé el fichero VMware-workstation-5.5.4-44386.tar.gz
2) Luego lo descomprimí en una carpeta /home/david/programas/vmware-distrib
3) Ejecuté el script de instalación:

How to run the Spectrum OneClick Console on Ubuntu-Firefox
If we follow the instructions of the Spectrum help we need to Install the Java 2 Runtime Environment (see the previous post). Then like the JRE includes the Java Web Start client, which is required to run JNLP applications like SPECTRUM OneClick Console, we need to associate the .jnlp extension with de javaws (Java Web Start) program.
So in this order do:
1) Go to the Spectrum OneClick console web page
2) Click on "Start Console"
3) Save the oneclick.jnlp file to disk.
4) Right-click on the .jnlp file that you downloaded, and select “Open with Other Application…”
5) Select “Use a custom command”, and click “Browse…”.
6) Locate your java installation folder and select the file $JAVA_HOME/jre1.6.0_01/javaws/javaws/.
On my system, that works out to /home/user/jre1.6.0_01/javaws/javaws
7) Click OK.
8) Restart Firefox and click again over "Start Console". Now a window like this should appear:
Then start the download of the application an after that the Spectrum Console appears in the screen. Easy and quick.

First we need to download de file jre-6u1-linux-i586.bin from www.java.com

# sudo mkdir /usr/java
Move the downloaded file to the previous directory:
# sudo mv jre-6u1-linux-i586.bin /usr/java
Change the permissions for make it executable:
# sudo chmod a+x jre-6u1-linux-i586.bin
Run the file to install software:

Now create a symbolic link:
# cd /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins
# sudo ln -s /home/user/jre1.6.0_01/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Año nuevo ...
Buenas,
el año nuevo viene cargadito de nuevos propósitos y entre ellos esta el darle un buen empujón a mi BLOG tanto en aspecto como en contenido. Asi que en los proximos meses seguramente habrá cambios. Digo meses porque hay algunos de esos nuevos propósitos que me consumiran mucho mucho tiempo. Esperemos que todos acaben en buen puerto.
Para todo el que visite este BLOG, aunque sea accidentalmente, que tengais un buen año 2007.
